This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, ā€œWe could get through that togetherā€?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
