Shifting from Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.
Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. āNever in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,ā declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.
āThe public are raging and disengaging,ā wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. āUnfortunately, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,ā he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, a segment of conservative pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materialsāoriginating from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondiāincludes scores of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative figures to go on the attack.
āItās pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,ā stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
āNew Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,ā posted attorney Rogan OāHandley. āThere is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.ā
Former President Spokesperson Issues Response
Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. āThe White House has not been hiding those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,ā Clintonās spokesperson Angel UreƱa said in a comment.
āThe release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it isnāt about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,ā the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Muted
However, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the release, particularly when compared with the loud calls for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to enact a bill mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that included no new data.
