Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
A recent study indicates that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such medications must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep backāaround 100 grams monthlyāafter stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
